Trademarked name for a synthetic, layered clay composed of sodium magnesium lithium silicate. Combined with water, Laponite (TM) forms a gel used to stabilize emulsions in paints, cosmetics, and other industrial products. It is also used as a film forming agent to produce conductive, antistatic, and barrier coatings; and, in conservation, as a poulticing material for cleaning paper and stone and ceramic objects.
