<skos:note xml:lang="en">Genus containing around 400 species of red- or black-berried plants, including the popular Christmas hollies grown for ornamentation. Timber from the holly has a fine uniform texture. The trees provide shelter, protection from predators, and food for birds, other animals, and insects; the berries are mildly poisonous to humans. Ilex is the only living genus in the family Aquifoliaceae.</skos:note>
