Descripción

Genus of stocky, stilt-legged, Clydesdale-sized horse that lived in South America during the Ice Age Pleistocene epoch, between 2 million and 10,000 years ago. Hippidion possessed a highly distinctive, long, domed nasal bone. In an alternate classification, the stilt-legged build is seen as similar to the onager and kiang wild asses of Asia, thus suggesting they migrated from Asia across the Bering Strait.
