Members of a family containing around 10,000 species of grasshoppers, characterized by short, heavy antennae, a four-valved ovipositor for laying eggs, a three-segmented tarsi (distal segments of the leg), being herbivorous, and including some of the most destructive species of agricultural pests known, the plague, or migratory, locusts.
