Refers to the work of a school of painters whose careers spanned the Edo period (1600-1868) to the early part of the Meiji period (1868-1912). The style is charcterized by the use oftraditional Japanese materials and techniques such as black or colored ink made from minerals, shells or plants and painted on paper or silk.
