Descripción

Bowed instrument name appears in medieval Europe from the mid-12th century to the late 14th century. In 12th century German and Latin texts it is mentioned together with the 'vièle' or 'fidel,' but not the 'rebec', suggesting that it is synonymous with the latter. The term 'gigue' began to disappear from fiction and historical accounts in the 14th century as 'rebec' gained favor. Descriptions in various languages mention the 'gigue' and 'vièle' being played together at feasts and celebrations, usually in connection with minstrels. However, there is evidence that the term was sometimes used in the early 14th century to refer to instuments identified as fiddles as well.
