It is characterized by being divided in half vertically, with one half comprising shelves enclosed by a wooden or glass-fronted door, for the storage of books, dishes, or curiosities, and the other side often comprising a secretary, cabinet, or some combination of mirror, drawers, and fold-down desk top. Distinguished from a chifforobe, which is case furniture also divided vertically, but typically characterized by placement in a bedroom, having a narrow clothes closet on one side, and a narrow chest of drawers with a mirror on the other side.
