Gum produced from grinding the seeds of the carob tree to a fine powder, which dissolves in hot water and cools to form a stable gel that is an excellent film former. The gum is used as dye thickener, and as size for food, cosmetics, textiles, and paper. Locust bean gums have been detected in the wrappings of Egyptian mummies.
