Any of a class of complex organic acids found in chromosomes of cells and viruses that store genetic information or translates the instructions inscribed in this information to the cell’s protein manufacturing sites. The two chief types of nucleic acid are DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid ) and RNA (ribonucleic acid).
