It is used for fiber, and also for the leaves as food, an ingredient in a sticky Middle Eastern herbal dish, molokhiya. The Biblical Book of Job mentions this food. The leaves and young shoots are eaten as a vegetable in Europe. C. olitorius fiber is softer, silkier, and stronger than white jute, C. capsularis.</skos:note>
