In general, people of high social status, especially those from an established wealthy family. Specifically, may refer to members of the privileged citizen class of ancient Rome; or to holders of high rank and title in the Byzantine Empire; in several Italian republics (Venice, Genoa, etc.), or in the Free Cities of the German Empire.
