Intendants

Refers generally to high-ranking public officers having the charge, direction, or superintendence of a town or province, a public business, or the household of a prince or noble. Refers specifically to administrative officials of that title under the ancien regime in France, in French, Spanish, and Portuguese colonies, and in some South American countries, serving either as governors or as seconds in authority to governors.
