Form of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, or hail) containing high levels of sulfuric or nitric acids. It is produced by the combination of atmospheric water with oxides released when hydrocarbon fuels are burned. Acid rain damages architecture and outdoor sculpture; it kills or harms forests, crops, and aquatic life.
