Film genre that intends to casue fright and terror in the viewer, aboth a means of emotional release and entertinment. Subjects can range from from violence and death and man-made monsters, to aliens from other worlds to madness to nuclear or natural disasters. Over the course of film history, horror has evolved with human history, mirroring current events and current fears. From the late 70s on, certain horror films have evolved into franchises such "Halloween" or "Nightmare on Elm Street," continuing the saga of the popular charcaters.
