Psychoanalytical concept and theory surrounding a supposed anxious state that comes with the awareness that one can be viewed: the subject loses a degree of autonomy upon realizing that he or she is a visible object. In the context of art, literature, film, and other arts, a way of regarding people or things so as to embody certain aspects of the relationship between the observer and the observed.
