A religious ideology originally developed within Lutheranism in the 17th and 18th centuries as a reform movement and reaction against rigid Protestant dogmatism. Pietism emphasizes good works, study of the Bible, and devotion. It came to influence other movements and ideologies such as evangelicalism, Methodism, and Moravian Brethren.
