Descripción

Describes works created by the inhabitants of the Gambier Islands. Few works of art created by the Gambier Islanders survive today due to their destruction by orders of missionaries in the 19th century. The few surviving sculptures and fragments demonstrate the sophistication of their craft, which is figuratively closer to European technique than the art of other Polynesian islands of the 19th century.
