Descripción

Refers to the style of artistic production in Spain and its colonies during the reign of Isabella I, from about 1480 to about 1510. Influenced by the presence of northern European craftsmen and architects, the style reflects a combination of Gothic and Mudéjar forms and motifs. In architecture buildings are elaborately decorated and are characterized by rich carving, star vaults, coats of arms, stalactite cornices, and cimborio. The same term is used in the field of Spanish historiography to refer to the reign of Isabella II (1833-1868), though this usage is not applied to art.
