Descripción

Style of domestic construction using four horizontal wooden beams (schwellen) that support vertical squared posts. This style produced a very stable frame that allowed the stacking of floors; it was the precursor to fachwerbau and other timber-frame construction. It has been found in Germany in structures dating to as early as the late 12th century.
