Refers to the period from about 1938 to 1756 BCE. The period is characterized by a revival of Old Kingdom artistic styles and a high quality of artistic production seen particularly in the construction of pyramid and mortuary temples, the introduction of portraiture in royal sculpture, and a high level of technical skill achieved in the minor arts.
