Refers to the Protoliterate period from about 4000 to 2900 BCE, in southern Mesopotamia, named after the site of Uruk. During this period developments such as the invention of writing and cylinder seals, the emergence of large cities, the establishment of widespread trade, and the appearance of monumental public buildings occurred.
