They are generally inscribed or decorated in low relief in the Celtic style, influenced by Viking art. The form is typically the Latin cross with a ring around the point of vertical and horizontal intersection; however, some of the oldest examples are single stone pillars that have been decorated and inscribed.</skos:note>
