Descripción
Refers to statues of Roman Catholic holy figures and Christ crucified, produced in Mexico and the Spanish-speaking United States from Spanish colonial times to the present, ranging in size from tiny, one- or two-inch figures to life-size, carved in the round from wood, generally cottonwood or pine, coated with gesso and brightly painted. They may be carved from a single piece or in several sections, often articulated or pegged together using cloth or leather strips, and sometimes clothed.
