Comics intended for an adult readership, dealing with socially outrageous subject matter such as sex, violence, drugs, and political dissent. Originating the mid-1960s in the U.S. and Great Britain, they were produced cheaply, mainly by the artists, and tended to be distributed through nontraditional channels.
