Optical toys that create moving images, consisting of a slotted disk featuring a series of images that appear to move when the disk is spun and viewed through the slots before a mirror. Its invention is attributed to Joseph Plateau in 1833. Distinct from "stroboscopes," similar devices that employ two disks in place of the mirror.
