Fast, powerful seagoing watercraft, usually schooner- or brig-rigged, with fine entrance, long run, moderate to pronounced drag, and strong deadrise; built in the first half of the 19th century and often involved in illegal trades, either as smugglers or slavers, or as revenue vessels trying to catch smugglers.
