Asymmetrical pairs of small, tuned, handplayed drums of north and central India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, consisting of a treble drum, its body a tapering wood cylinder, and a bass drum with a round, bowl-like body of clay or chromed copper. They constitute one of the most important instruments of modern classical Indian music.
