Psalteries of the Near East, Turkey, North Africa, and parts of Asia and southeastern Europe, with from 50 to 100 strings of gut, metal, or nylon strung in courses of three over a shallow trapezoidal box, the belly of which is partially covered with animal skin. Some contemporary models have small brass levers controlling string tension.
