Facilities providing inexpensive, minimally supervised, communal lodging for young people traveling without their parents. Youth hostels originated in early 20th-century Germany, then spread internationally.The activities of youth hostel associations are coordinated by the International Youth Hostel Federation (founded 1932) which facilitates international travel by members.
