Descripción
Originally a pipe or reed (hence the name arundo, which means "reed") with which the celebrant of the Mass may sip the communion wine, instead of the celebrant and all communicants putting their lips to the rim of the same cup. Use of the arundo was known from the Carolingian period onwards, when the arundo was made of a precious material such as gold; for example, in the papal high mass, a golden arundo is used.
