Refers to any methylated derivative of cellulose. Methyl cellulose is a white powder that swells in water and is used as a substitute for natural gums, functioning in various commercial contexts as emulsifying, thickening, or sizing agent, lubricant, and suspension aid. In textile and paper conservation, it is used as an adhesive and as a poulticing material for removal of stains.
