General term used to refer to dense, compact dyewood from several (but not all) species of the Caesalpinia genus used in violins, bows, veneer, cabinetwork, and high quality furniture. It accepts a high polish. The wood contains the colorant brasilin, a hydroxyanthraquinone, that gives a deep red to brownish color.
