Primary supports

The chief supporting substances used in the fabrication of works created by applying media to a support. The distinction of "primary support" is often reserved for situations where a mount or other "secondary support" is also employed. For example, chalk may be applied to a primary support, paper, to make a drawing; and the paper support could then be mounted to a secondary support, cardboard.
